Before 1965,Egypt was more liberal, cities as Cairo and Alexandria were more or less of a western style. Some districts in Cairo as Heliopolis were inhabited by a more or less cosmopolitan community.Pianos were virtually present in most middle class houses, exotic plants and birds were in many balconies.Classic music and dancing tunes [tango, samba, rumba, valtz, etc.] were often heard. One of my earliest memories was these tunes which I posted to my blog [link below ].I used to hear them when I visited my uncle's house at Mohamed Mazhar Street-Zamalek.My maternal uncle Dr.Seif El Ghareeb [ 1921-1965 ] was a dentist whose clinic was at Fouad I street in downtown Cairo. He owned a vast collection of 78rpm disc records [ mostly Italian and Greek songs,in addition to famous dancing tunes at his time as tango,samba,rumba,valtz,etc.],. As he never married and had no children, his collection finally became my property after he died in 11 September 1965. At that time,I was still in primary school, seven years old.It was only due to good luck that the collection survived, mostly intact, the majority still in good condition .Most of the songs and tunes in this collection are largely unknown to current generations.I decided to post some of his collection on my blog for history. Some date from the 1930s,the rest are mostly from the 40s and 50s era.Few of the songs suffer from clicks due to some defects in the original discs.I first managed to edit them, but decided to leave most of them in their original condition [except for few very badly distorted ones ] ,until more efficient software editing programs are available to me

Timida serenata -Emilio Pericoli and Fernanda Furlani [unedited]

Sempre nel 1963 partecipa all'Eurofestival classificandosi terzo. The famous Italian singer Emilio Pericoli [born 1928] who was active in the late 50s and early 60s and mostly known for his song [Al di la] ,is here singing a very rare version of the song [Timida serenata] with the Italian singer Fernanda Furlani. The song music and lyrics were put by [Redi-Nisa]. P.G. Redi,[1908-1962] was a famous Italian composer, known for composing the music of many famous songs as [non dimenticar -T'ho voluto Bene] of the film [Anna] of 1951. Nisa ( Nicola Salerno ,1910 - 1969 ) was a famous Italian lyricist at his time. The song was performed for the first time in the 1958 music festival of San Remo [Sanremo] by the Late Aurelio Fierro &Gloria Christian, another version was also sung in Sanremo 1958 by Gino Latilla & Carla Boni.. Many singers performed this song in the late 50s,among them were,Nilla Pizzi, Claudio Villa [in Italian ,]Dalida,Dario Moreno [in french],Margot Eskens & Silvio Francesco,Christa Williams &Jo Roland [in German],Sergio Fiallo [from Cuba],etc. This rare version of [Timida serenata] by Emilio Pericoli was released as a shellac 78rpm record by [Parlophone] in 1958. The presented words that were on this Parlophone 78rpm record read [Timida Serenata Redi-Nisa-canzone-calypso(San Remo 1958) Emilio Pericoli& Fernanda Furlani -con complesso "Festival"].Unfortunately,Emilio Pericoli version of this song did not become popular [although a masterpeice of art in my opinion].No recent releases of it on either tape or CD were ever made, even the PARLOPHONE 78rpm record is not available nowadays in stores .The Italian lyrics are as follows: Sette le stelle dell'Orsa Maggiore, sette le note della mia chitarra, sette le notti che il mandorlo in fiore ascolta tra i fiori il canto del mio cuor. D'amor...d'amor!
